This is the Crème de la Crème of Transformers figures. The 20th Anniversary Optimus Prime is everything an anniversary figure should be.
If you have seen my previous post regarding the Retro Classics TMNT figures, you know that I absolutely love to see figures I had as a kid make a comeback. What I love even more is when they come back like this!
Toy manufacturers seem to put little effort in to the stuff they release now. Anything that does show any bit of effort on their part, you are going to be paying premium prices for. This figure is no exception. And while I end up passing on a lot of the higher end stuff, figures like that’s you just cant let slip through you fingers!
So this is essentialy Hasbro’s version of the Encore MP-04 Convoy figure. There are a few aesthetic difference between the two. The most noticeable are the shorter pipes on the shoulders and of course no trailer. You can buy aftermarket pipe upgrades though for fairly cheap. I got me a set and they are very nice quality.
One thing I think is funny about this guy is that it is called the “DVD Edition”, but if you notice the small print under the title on the box it says “DVD not included”. Ah Hasbro, you kill me!
The figure itself is a mix of plastic and metal pieces, much like it’s vintage counterpart. This guy is super solid, and extremely heavy. It tends to be very top heavy though, which strains the ankle and knee joints at times.
It comes with a nifty base to pose on, which has catch phrases recorded by Peter Cullen exclusively for this release. For accessories you get the classic blaster rifle, electro axe, Matrix of Leadership, and Megatron in pistol form.
If you don’t have the money to pick up Encore figure, I highly suggest you check out Hasbro’s Masterpiece line.
